Metal Head Mash is a minigame found in the Hip Hog Heaven Saloon during Jak II. Krew used it to hide the Time Map, which Tess witnessed. She had Daxter attempt to retrieve it in the mission "Beat the metal head mash". After he managed to reach 1500 points, the machine stopped and ejected the Time Map.
Unlike other minigames in the game Metal Head Mash does not grant Precursor orbs upon reaching a high enough score. The minigame plays very similarly to the real-life game, Whac-A-Mole.
Minigame[]
The goal is to hit the Metal Head puppets that pop out of the holes, before they retreat back down. The machine has eight holes, with each one corresponding to a button on the controller. The buttons are the D-Pad (up, right, down and left) and the face buttons (, , and ). Pressing a button will then have Daxter smash that area with a hammer, which he does rather fast, being able to hit all of the possible target areas in rapid succession. The puppets' speed will gradually increase as the game goes on, although whenever a puppet would pop up out of every hole at once some slight additional time is granted to hit them all.
There are three types of targets to hit: gray, gold, and electrified red puppets. A standard gray Metal Head is worth ten points, gold is worth fifty, and the red ones are worthless, instead detracting at least two lives (out of twenty total) and removing all puppets in play. Failing to hit a puppet will also result in losing a life, although this does not count for puppets removed by hitting a red one. Hitting an empty area does nothing, although doing so by playing haphazardly is likely to lead to accidental hits on red puppets as they can pop up directly prior to hitting the hole.
Just as with the Onin game, you can also pause the game by pressing the select button on your controller. This gives you time to think about what buttons you're going to press next.
